Gonzalo Caballero Míguez (born January 9, 1975) is a Spanish economist and politician. He is known for being the leader (Secretary-General) of the Socialists' Party of Galicia (PSdeG-PSOE) since 2017.
Early Life and Education
Gonzalo Caballero was born in Ponteareas, a town in the province of Pontevedra, Spain, on January 9, 1975. His father was a local politician, serving as a Socialist councillor in their hometown. Gonzalo is also the nephew of Abel Caballero, who has been a government minister and is currently the mayor of Vigo. Both his father and uncle are members of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE).
Gonzalo joined the PSOE at a young age. He studied hard and earned a degree in Economic and Business Sciences from the University of Vigo. Later, he completed a PhD in economics from the same university. He also earned another PhD in political science from the University of A Coruña. Today, he works as a senior lecturer, teaching Applied Economics at the University of Vigo.
Political Career
Gonzalo Caballero began his political journey in the city of Vigo. In 2003, he ran for the Vigo city council, but he was not elected at that time. However, in September 2005, he became a municipal councillor, filling a spot that became empty. He did not run for reelection in 2007.
For some years, Gonzalo had different political ideas from his uncle, Abel Caballero, who became Mayor of Vigo in 2007. Despite these professional disagreements, they reportedly kept their personal relationship separate.
In October 2017, Gonzalo Caballero ran to become the Secretary-General of the PSdeG-PSOE. He was seen as a "grassroots" candidate, meaning he was supported by ordinary members rather than the main party leaders. He won the vote, even though some party leaders, including his uncle, did not support his bid.
In 2016, he was on the PSdeG-PSOE list for the 2016 Galician regional election in Pontevedra, but he was not elected then. However, on July 31, 2019, he became a member of the Parliament of Galicia, taking a seat that had become available.
