Early Years and Loans
He started playing for Racing's main team in 1998. During his first four seasons, he also spent some time on loan to CD Logroñés, a team in a lower league called Segunda División. In the 2000–01 season, he scored three goals in 19 games for Racing. However, his team was unfortunately relegated (moved down) from La Liga that year.
Playing for Big Clubs
After leaving Racing, Gonzalo played for other well-known Spanish clubs. He joined Atlético Madrid, a big team, and also played on loan for Real Valladolid and RCD Mallorca. These experiences helped him become a more skilled player.
Return to Racing Santander
In 2006–07, Gonzalo returned to his home club, Racing de Santander. He quickly became a very important player and one of the team's captains. In the next season, he played in every single match. That year, Racing made history by qualifying for the UEFA Cup (now called the UEFA Europa League) for the very first time. Gonzalo also scored two goals that season.
