Playing Career Highlights
Gonzalo Zárate started his football journey in Argentina. He played in the youth teams of clubs like Lanús and Tiro Federal. Later, he played for PCC San José in a local league in Argentina.
Moving to Switzerland
In the summer of 2007, Zárate moved to Switzerland. He joined SC Kriens, a team in the Swiss Challenge League. He scored many goals for Kriens, which caught the attention of a bigger club, Grasshopper. On September 15, 2007, he joined Grasshopper on a loan deal.
Success at Grasshopper
After his loan, Zárate officially joined Grasshopper. He played for them until 2010. During his time there, he became a key player, scoring many important goals.
Time in Austria
On May 18, 2010, Gonzalo Zárate signed with FC Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. He made a great start, scoring his first goal for the club in his very first match on July 13. This goal came in a Champions League qualifying game against HB Torshaven. He played for Red Bull Salzburg until 2012.
Returning to Switzerland
After his time in Austria, Zárate returned to Switzerland. He played for several more Swiss clubs, including Young Boys, Thun, Vaduz, and Lausanne-Sport.

In September 2019, Zárate joined Swiss Promotion League club FC Black Stars Basel. He later retired from playing professional football. After retiring, he decided to stay in the sport. He was hired as a youth coach at Grasshopper Club Zürich, the same club where he had played earlier in his career. This allowed him to help young players develop their skills.
