F.C. Red Bull Salzburg is a popular football team from Salzburg, Austria. They play in the top Austrian league, called the Austrian Bundesliga. Before 2005, the club was known as SV Austria Salzburg.

In 2005, the Red Bull Company bought the club. They changed its name and switched the team's colours from violet to red and white. The company's logo was also added to the team's look. Red Bull Salzburg also has two special football training schools, called academies, in Ghana and Brazil. Their home stadium is the Red Bull Arena. It first opened in 2003 and was updated for the 2008 Euro football tournament.

Club History

Early Years as SV Austria Salzburg

The football club started on September 13, 1933. It was formed by combining two older clubs, FC Rapid Salzburg and FC Hertha Salzburg. After World War II, the club restarted as SV Austria Salzburg.

In the 1952-53 season, they reached the A-Liga for the first time. This was the highest football division in Austria back then. They stayed there for three seasons but were moved down to a lower league in 1959. To help them stay in the league, they signed Erich Probst. He was a famous player who scored many goals in the 1954 FIFA World Cup. He was also the first player from SV Austria to play for the Austrian national team.

The club had some good and bad times over the next few years. Their first big success was finishing second in the league in the 1971-72 season. This was also the first time they played in the UEFA Cup, a big European competition. In 1974, they reached the Austrian Cup final for the first time but lost the match.

Golden Era and Changes

The best years for the club were between 1990 and 1997. During this time, they won the Austrian championship three times. They also played in the UEFA Champions League, which is Europe's biggest club competition. In 1994, they even reached the final of the UEFA Cup but lost to Inter Milan. They won their first Austrian Bundesliga title that same year and again the next year. In their first Champions League appearance in 1994, they made it to the group stage.

In 2005, the Red Bull Company bought the club because the previous owners had financial difficulties. Some long-time fans were not happy with the changes. They decided to leave and start a new club using the old name, SV Austria Salzburg. Since 2005, the original club has been known as FC Red Bull Salzburg.

FC Red Bull Salzburg Success

After Red Bull took over in 2005, one of their main goals was for the team to regularly play in the UEFA Champions League. While they haven't achieved that consistently, the new club has been very successful in Austria. They have won the national league title many times and finished second several times.

In the 2009-10 Europa League, the club won all six of their group stage matches. They beat strong teams like Villarreal, Lazio, and Levski Sofia. However, they were knocked out in the next round. They also reached the Europa League group stages in the following years.

In the 2012-13 Champions League, they surprisingly lost to a team from Luxembourg, F91 Dudelange. This led to changes in the team, with new players joining. In the 2013-14 season, the team was very strong and finished first in the league. In the 2017–18 Europa League, Salzburg had a fantastic run. They reached the semi-finals after beating top teams like Lazio, Borussia Dortmund, and Real Sociedad. They eventually lost to Olympique de Marseille.
