History of the Red Bull Arena
The Red Bull Arena was built between 2001 and 2003. It officially opened on March 8, 2003. The very first match played here was between SV Austria Salzburg and FC Kärnten, which ended in a 1-1 tie. This new stadium took the place of an older one called Stadion Lehen.
Where is the Stadium Located?
Even though it's called the Red Bull Arena Salzburg, the stadium is not actually inside the city of Salzburg. It's located in a nearby area called Wals-Siezenheim. When international matches are played, the stadium is sometimes called "EM Stadion Wals-Siezenheim."
Stadium Design and Changes
The stadium was designed by two groups of architects: Schuster Architekten from Düsseldorf and Atelier Albert Wimmer from Vienna. In 2005, two large video screens were added to the stadium.
When it first opened, the stadium could hold about 18,000 fans. However, for the Euro 2008 championship, it needed to be much bigger. So, in 2006, the stadium was expanded to hold over 30,000 people. This was done by adding a second level of seating, like a second balcony. The newly expanded stadium was shown off during a friendly match against Arsenal F.C., which FC Red Bull Salzburg won 1-0.
After the Euro 2008 tournament, there were some disagreements with neighbors. However, it was decided that the new second balcony would stay for FC Red Bull Salzburg to use. The Red Bull Arena was also the only stadium in Austria that used artificial turf for its field. But since 2010, it has switched to natural grass, just like most other football stadiums.
