Jonathan Soriano Casas (born on 24 September 1985) is a Spanish former football player. He was known for being a great striker, which means he was very good at scoring goals.
Jonathan started his career playing for teams like Espanyol and Barcelona. He mostly played for their reserve teams, which are like junior teams for young players. In 2012, he joined Red Bull Salzburg in Austria. This is where he became a huge star!
At Red Bull Salzburg, he helped his team win the league and cup four times each. He was also the top scorer in the Austrian Football Bundesliga three times. He scored an amazing 172 goals in 202 games for the club. Jonathan also played for Spain's youth teams and for the Catalonia team.
Club Journey
Starting at Espanyol
Jonathan Soriano was born in a place called El Pont de Vilomara i Rocafort in Catalonia, Spain. He started playing football in the youth teams of RCD Espanyol. He played his first game for the main Espanyol team in the 2002–03 season. He was still playing for the B team (junior team) at the time.
He officially joined the main team in 2005–06. Jonathan also spent some time playing on loan for other teams in the second division, like Almería and Poli Ejido. This means he played for them for a short time before returning to Espanyol.
In 2009, he went on loan again to Albacete Balompié. After this, his contract with Espanyol ended, and he left the club.
Time at Barcelona
On 30 July 2009, Jonathan joined FC Barcelona's reserve team, Barcelona B. He made his first official game for the main Barcelona team in October 2009. He played for a few minutes in a cup game.
He was one of the top scorers in the league that season, helping Barcelona B get back into the second division. In the 2010–11 season, he scored an incredible 32 goals! This made him the top scorer in the division and set a new record for Barcelona B.
Becoming a Star at Red Bull Salzburg
On 19 January 2012, Jonathan moved to Austria to play for FC Red Bull Salzburg. In his first year, his team won both the league and the cup, which is called a "double." He scored five goals in 15 games as he got used to his new team.
In the 2012–13 season, he scored 26 goals in 32 games. He even scored three goals in one game (a "hat-trick") against Wolfsberger AC. This was a special day because his daughter was born that morning!
In 2013, Jonathan became the captain of Red Bull Salzburg. He was amazing in the UEFA Europa League that year. He scored three goals in one game against VMFD Žalgiris Vilnius and another three against IF Elfsborg. He was the top scorer in the whole tournament with eight goals!
He was also the top scorer in the Austrian league with 31 goals in 28 games, helping Salzburg win the title again. He also helped them win the Austrian Cup, scoring two goals in the final.
In August 2014, Jonathan scored five goals in one league game against SV Grödig! He was voted the league's Player of the Year. In September 2015, he scored four goals in a game against SV Mattersburg. A month later, he scored his 100th league goal for Salzburg. He reached this milestone faster than many famous players. His manager even said he was the best footballer he had ever worked with!
For three years in a row, Jonathan was the top scorer in the league, and his team kept winning the league and cup. In March 2017, the club even retired his number 26 jersey, which means no other player will wear that number for the team because of his amazing achievements.
Playing in China and Later Years
On 26 February 2017, Jonathan moved to China to play for Beijing Sinobo Guoan F.C.. He continued to score many goals there.
In December 2018, he joined Al Hilal SFC in Saudi Arabia. Then, in August 2019, he returned to Spain to play for Girona FC in the second division.
After a short time without a club, he signed with CD Castellón in March 2021. On his 36th birthday, 24 September 2021, Jonathan officially announced that he was retiring from professional football.
International Games
Jonathan Soriano was a top scorer for Spain's Under-17 team. He scored seven goals in the 2002 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. He scored three goals against Moldova and two goals in two other games.
In 2005, he scored four goals for Spain's Under-21 team in a huge 14–0 win against San Marino. He also played for the Catalonia team, scoring a goal in a game against Paraguay.
