Sékou Koïta (born November 28, 1999) is a talented football player from Mali. He plays as a forward, which means he's usually trying to score goals for his team. Currently, he plays for CSKA Moscow in Russia and is also a key player for the Mali national team.
Club Career
Sékou Koïta started his journey in professional football with FC Liefering. In 2018, he moved to Wolfsberger AC on a temporary loan from Red Bull Salzburg. He later extended his contract with Red Bull Salzburg until 2024, showing his commitment to the team.
In February 2021, Sékou faced a challenge. He was suspended for three months from all football activities by UEFA. This happened after a doping investigation. Koïta had taken medicine for altitude sickness that contained a banned substance. UEFA decided that he didn't mean to break the rules. However, players are always responsible for what goes into their bodies.
In July 2024, Koïta signed a new three-year contract. He joined CSKA Moscow, a big club in the Russian Premier League.
International Career
Sékou Koïta has had a very successful international career playing for Mali.
Youth Teams
In 2015, Sékou helped the Mali Under-17 team win the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations. He scored two goals in this tournament. Mali won the championship without losing a single game. This was Mali's first-ever African championship title!
Later in 2015, Sékou played in the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. He played seven games and scored two goals. One goal was in the quarterfinals against Croatia, which was the only goal of the match. He scored another goal against Belgium in the semi-final. Mali made it to the final but lost to Nigeria.
With the Under-20 team, Sékou played in the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations twice. In 2017, he scored a goal against Guinea. In 2019, Mali won the competition! They beat Senegal in the final after a penalty shootout.
Senior National Team
In 2016, Sékou joined the Mali senior team for the African Nations Championship in Rwanda. He played six games and scored a goal against Uganda. Mali reached the final but was defeated by the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
He was also part of the Mali squad for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. In this tournament, he played one match against Angola. Mali reached the round of 16 but was knocked out by Ivory Coast.
