René Aufhauser's Football Journey
René Aufhauser started his football career playing for smaller clubs. These included ASK Köflach and ASK Voitsberg. It was at ASK Voitsberg that people first noticed his talent. He was playing as a defensive midfielder, a position where he showed great skill.
Playing for SV Austria Salzburg (1997–2001)
In 1997, René joined SV Austria Salzburg. He had already played very well for six months there in the season before. Even though he was an amateur player before, he was soon playing for Austria's Under-21 team! He stayed on the team even with many famous players around. He left in 2001 to join a new club where he could grow even more as a player. That club was Grazer AK.
Time at Grazer AK (2001–2005)
When René first joined Grazer AK, he didn't play in every game. He had to work hard to earn his spot, competing with Aleš Čeh, a captain from Slovenia. His strong performances for Grazer AK caught the eye of big English clubs. These included Everton F.C., Fulham F.C., and Middlesbrough F.C.. In 2005, he left Grazer AK to return to his former club, Red Bull Salzburg.
Return to Red Bull Salzburg (2005–2010)
René's second time at Red Bull Salzburg brought even more success. The club was now owned by Red Bull. During this period, he played in 115 league games and scored 20 goals. René also helped his team win the Austrian championship twice. In January 2010, he was moved to the reserve team. This gave him a chance to leave the club, as he had only started two league games under the new coach, Huub Stevens.
Moving to LASK Linz (2010–2012)
At the end of January 2010, René Aufhauser joined Bundesliga team LASK Linz. He scored his first goal for the club in March 2010. It was a winning goal against FK Austria Wien, helping his team win 1–0. After LASK Linz lost its license and was moved down to the third league, René left the club.
Playing for FC Liefering (2012–2014)
René then signed with FC Liefering, which was a team connected to FC Red Bull Salzburg. The idea was for him to be a leader for the younger players on the team. Liefering became champions of their league, the Regionalliga West. They then played two matches against René's old team, LASK, winning both (2:0 and 3:0). This allowed FC Liefering to move up to the First League, which is the second-highest level in Austrian football.
After playing for Liefering for two seasons, René Aufhauser ended his playing career. He then became an assistant coach for the club.
Playing for Austria's National Team
Even though René played very well, he wasn't chosen for the national team by the coach Herbert Prohaska. It was only under coach Otto Barić that he was called up in 2001. He was a Grazer AK player at the time. He was on the bench for a game against Liechtenstein.
René finally played his first game for Austria under Otto Barić's next coach, Hans Krankl. This was on March 27, 2002, against Slovakia. Under Hans Krankl, and later under coach Josef Hickersberger, René often started games. He played in 58 international matches for Austria and scored 12 goals.
In the first game for Austria at UEFA Euro 2008 in Vienna, René accidentally fouled a Croatian player, Ivica Olić. This led to a penalty kick for Croatia. Luka Modrić scored the penalty, giving Croatia a 1–0 lead very early in the game.
