Herbert Prohaska (born August 8, 1955) is a famous Austrian former football player. Many people think he is one of Austria's best football players ever! He was often called "Schneckerl," which means "curly hair" in Viennese German. This was because of his curly hairstyle when he was younger.
Herbert was a very talented and smart midfielder. He was known for his great technique, clever play, and very accurate passes. Today, he works as a football expert for the Austrian TV channel, ORF.

Playing for Clubs
Herbert Prohaska started his professional football journey in 1972. He joined the club Austria Vienna in his home city of Vienna, Austria. He played there for many years.
By 1980, he had helped Austria Vienna win four Austrian league titles. They also won the Austrian Cup three times. In 1980, he moved to Italy to play for Inter Milan. There, he helped his team win the Italian Cup in his second season.
In 1982, Herbert moved to another Italian club, Roma. He had a great first year there, winning the Italian championship! After his time in Italy, he returned to Austria Vienna in 1983. He finished his amazing playing career with them.
Playing for Austria's National Team
Herbert Prohaska first played for the Austrian national team in November 1974. This was in a friendly match against Turkey. He was a key player for Austria in two big tournaments. He played in the 1978 FIFA World Cup and the 1982 FIFA World Cup.
He played a total of 83 matches for his country. In these games, he scored 10 goals. His last international match was in June 1989. It was a World Cup qualification game against Iceland. He retired from playing before the 1990 World Cup, even though Austria qualified for it.
Becoming a Manager
After he stopped playing football in 1989, Herbert Prohaska became a coach. He started coaching his old club, Austria Vienna. As a coach, he led them to win two Austrian League titles. They also won the Austrian Cup twice under his guidance.
In 1993, he became the manager of the Austrian national team. He successfully led them to qualify for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. He resigned from his role in 1999. After that, he returned to manage Austria Vienna again from 1999 to 2000.
Special Awards
Herbert Prohaska has received many special awards for his football career. In November 2003, the Austrian Football Association chose him as Austria's "Golden Player." This award recognized him as their most outstanding player of the past 50 years.
In August 2004, he was voted the "Austrian Footballer of the Century." This happened when the Austrian Football Association celebrated its 100th anniversary. These awards show how important he was to Austrian football.
