Josef Hickersberger (born 27 April 1948) is a famous Austrian football player and coach. He used to play as a midfielder and later coached the Austrian national team and the club Rapid Wien.

Playing Career: A Football Journey
Josef Hickersberger was born in Amstetten, Austria. He began his football journey with Austria Wien in 1966. He played there for six successful years.
After his time in Austria, he moved to Germany to play for Bundesliga teams like Kickers Offenbach and Fortuna Düsseldorf. He then returned to Austria to play for SSW Innsbruck and finished his professional playing career with Rapid Vienna. Even after retiring from professional football, he continued to play for amateur teams and started his first coaching jobs there.
Playing for Austria: The National Team
Hickersberger first played for the Austrian national team in May 1968. He played in the 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina. He played 39 games for his country and scored five goals.
His last game for Austria was a very famous one at the 1978 World Cup. Austria played against West Germany and won 3–2. This game is often called The miracle of Córdoba because it was such a surprising and exciting win for Austria.
Coaching Career: Leading Teams to Success
After he stopped playing, Josef Hickersberger became a football coach. He coached the Austrian national team at the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.
Challenges and New Adventures
After a surprising 1–0 loss to the Faroe Islands in a qualifying game for UEFA Euro 1992, he decided to leave the national team. He then coached club teams like Fortuna Düsseldorf and Austria Wien.
Hickersberger also spent several years coaching teams in the Middle East. He coached the Bahrain national team and clubs like Al Wasl FC in Dubai, which is a very popular club in the UAE.
Return to Austria and Major Wins
In 2002, Hickersberger came back to Austria. He helped Rapid Wien become successful again. With him as coach, Rapid Wien won the Austrian Championship in the 2004–05 season. This was their first championship win in nine years!
Winning the championship meant Rapid Wien got to play in the UEFA Champions League group stage. They played against big teams like Bayern Munich, Juventus, and Club Brugge.
Coaching at UEFA Euro 2008
He coached the Austrian national team again during the UEFA Euro 2008 tournament. This tournament was held in Austria and Switzerland. Austria earned one point in the group stage. They lost 1–0 to Croatia and Germany. They managed a 1–1 draw against Poland with a late goal from Ivica Vastić. Austria finished third in their group and did not move on in the competition. Hickersberger left his role as Austria's national team coach on 23 June 2008.
After Euro 2008, he signed a contract with Al-Wahda FC (Abu Dhabi) in the UAE. He led them to good results, including a spot in the Asian Champions League play-offs and a cup final.
Family Life
Josef Hickersberger's son, Thomas, also played football. He played for the Austrian national team in 2002.
