Playing for Clubs
Roman Wallner was born in Graz, Styria, Austria. He started his football journey with his hometown club, Sturm Graz, in 1998. The next year, he moved to Rapid Vienna. This was a very successful time for him. He played over 100 matches and scored 42 goals in five seasons with the team.
After Rapid Vienna, he spent a year playing for the German club Hannover 96. He also played for VfB Admira Wacker Mödling for a year. In 2005, he joined Austria Vienna and stayed there until 2007.
Playing in Scotland and Greece
In 2007, Wallner signed a contract with Falkirk F.C., a team in the Scottish Premier League. Later that year, in November 2007, he went on loan to Hamilton Academical, a team in the Scottish First Division. He scored one goal in four games before returning to Falkirk the next month.
In January 2008, Falkirk and Wallner agreed to end his contract. He then signed with Apollon Kalamarias in Greece.
A Rule About Playing for Teams
In February 2008, a player from Apollon Kalamarias scored a goal against Olympiacos. Apollon won the game 1–0. However, Olympiacos complained about Roman Wallner playing in that match.
According to FIFA rules, a player can only play for two teams in one season. Wallner had already played for Falkirk and Hamilton Academical that season. Because of this rule, Apollon Kalamarias lost the game 0–3 and had one point taken away.
The case went to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Even though Apollon Kalamarias was later moved down to a lower league, this event was a big topic in Greek football for a while.
Playing for His Country
Roman Wallner played for the Austrian national team. His first game for Austria was on April 25, 2001. It was a 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Liechtenstein.
Becoming a Coach
After he stopped playing football, Roman Wallner started a new career as a coach. He joined Salzburger AK 1914 as a coach. His main job was to help the team's forwards, both in the main team and the youth teams.
In October 2019, Wallner became the temporary manager for Salzburger AK for the last three games of that year. On May 1, 2020, he was officially named the manager of Salzburger AK 1914. From 2023 to 2024, he worked as an assistant coach for SCR Altach.
