Goo Arlooktoo's Political Career
Goo Arlooktoo began his political journey in 1995. He was chosen by voters in the 1995 Northwest Territories general election. He represented the area known as Baffin South.
Becoming a Government Minister
In his first term, Arlooktoo was asked to join the government's main team, called the cabinet. He became the Minister of Justice and Housing. This meant he was in charge of laws and helping people find homes. He also served as the Deputy Premier, which is like a second-in-command to the premier.
Serving as Acting Premier
In 1998, the Premier at the time, Don Morin, stepped down from his role. Because of this, Goo Arlooktoo became the Acting Premier. He led the government for a short time, from November 26 to December 10, 1998. After that, the members of the Legislative Assembly chose Jim Antoine to be the new premier.
In 1999, the new territory of Nunavut was created. Arlooktoo left the Northwest Territories government to run in the 1999 Nunavut general election. Many people thought he would become the first Premier of Nunavut. However, he was narrowly defeated by Olayuk Akesuk. Arlooktoo came in a close second place.
Later Life and Legacy
After the Nunavut election, Goo Arlooktoo continued to help his community. He assisted the new Nunavut government. He helped train the newly elected members. This training helped them learn how to do their jobs well.
Later, he became the Executive Director of the Qikiqtaaluk Wildlife Board. He worked there until his death. Goo Arlooktoo passed away suddenly from a heart attack at his home on April 30, 2002. He was 38 years old. His father, Joe Arlooktoo, was also a politician who served in the Northwest Territories Legislature.
