The Gooden Grant House is a special old home located in Head Harbor, Isle au Haut, Maine. It was built in 1911 and is known for its unique Queen Anne style. This house belonged to Gooden Grant, a very interesting person from the 1900s. He was one of the best lobstermen on the island. In 2013, his house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical building.

What Makes the Gooden Grant House Special?

The Gooden Grant House is found on Isle au Haut, Maine. This island is at the eastern end of Penobscot Bay in central Maine. The island is about 7 miles (11 km) long and 3 miles (5 km) wide.

About half of the island is part of Acadia National Park. The rest is a small, quiet community. Many people visit in the summer. Head Harbor is at the southeast corner of the island.

The House's Design

The Gooden Grant House sits at the top of Head Harbor. It is on the east side of the island's main road. The house has two stories and is made of wood. It has a pointed roof and a strong granite block base.

A cool, round tower with a small, pointed roof sticks out from one corner. A porch wraps around the front and side of the house. It has fancy posts that hold it up. Near the house, there is also a smaller building that looks like a barn.

Who Was Gooden Grant?

A local builder named Turner built the house in 1911. At that time, it was one of the nicest homes on the island for people who lived there all year. Gooden Grant was a very important fisherman and lobsterman in Head Harbor.

People thought Gooden Grant was one of the most successful lobstermen. He often caught more lobsters than others. He also got better prices for his catch. As more tourists came to the island, Gooden Grant became famous. He was even on a postcard as one of the island's "old salts," surrounded by lobster traps.
