Species:
corynocarpa

Goodenia corynocarpa is a special kind of flowering plant. It is a herb, which means it has soft stems, not woody ones like trees. This plant grows in Western Australia, mostly near the coast. It has pretty yellow flowers.

What it Looks Like

Goodenia corynocarpa is an upright plant. It usually grows to be about 30 to 60 centimeters (about 1 to 2 feet) tall. Its leaves are long and narrow, or shaped like an oval. They are about 6 to 9 centimeters long and 4 to 10 millimeters wide. These leaves grow at the very bottom of the plant.

Flowers and Fruit

The yellow flowers grow in long clusters called racemes. These clusters can be up to 30 centimeters long. Each flower has small, leaf-like parts called bracts at its base. Each flower also sits on a little stalk called a pedicel, which can be up to 30 millimeters long.

The flowers have lance-shaped sepals, which are like small leaves that protect the bud. These are about 3 to 4 millimeters long. The main part of the flower, called the corolla, is yellow and about 12 to 15 millimeters long. The lower parts of the corolla are about 4 to 6 millimeters long. They have thin, wing-like edges about 2 millimeters wide.

This plant usually flowers in August. After flowering, it produces a narrow, tube-shaped fruit. This fruit is a capsule, which means it's a dry case that opens to release seeds. The capsules are about 12 to 26 millimeters long.

How it Got its Name

Goodenia corynocarpa was first officially described in 1860. A famous botanist named Ferdinand von Mueller wrote about it. He found it from plants collected near the Murchison River. Another person named Augustus Oldfield collected these plants.

The second part of its scientific name, corynocarpa, has a special meaning. It comes from Greek words. "Coryno" means "club," and "carpa" means "fruit." So, corynocarpa means "club-fruited," describing the shape of its fruit.

Where it Grows

This goodenia plant grows in Western Australia. You can find it on grassy plains close to the coast. Its home range is between a town called Onslow and the Murchison River.

Conservation Status

The plant Goodenia corynocarpa is currently considered "not threatened." This means that there are enough of these plants in the wild. The Department of Environment and Conservation (Western Australia) keeps track of its status.
