History of Goodman

Goodman started as a logging town in the late 1800s. It was created by the Goodman brothers: James B., Robert F., and William O. Goodman. They owned the Sawyer-Goodman Lumber Company.

Early Days and Name Change

The town was first called Dunbar in 1899. Later, in 1915, its name was changed to Goodman to honor the founding family.

Smart Logging Practices

Robert B. Goodman, who was Robert F. Goodman's son, was one of the first loggers to use a method called selective cutting. This means instead of cutting down all the trees, they only cut certain ones. This helps the forest grow back and stay healthy.

The Goodman Lumber Company's Legacy

For 62 years, starting in 1927, the Goodman Lumber Company harvested a huge amount of timber. Thanks to selective cutting, the amount of timber in the forest today is similar to what it was in 1927. This shows how important sustainable logging practices are.

The Goodman Club House

In the center of town, there's a building called the Goodman Club House. It used to have a ballroom, a theater, and a restaurant. Famous performers would even come to entertain there! The Club House has recently reopened with new owners.
