Goodwell is a town in Texas County, Oklahoma, United States. It's a small town with a population of 951 people, according to the 2020 census. Goodwell is well-known because it's home to Oklahoma Panhandle State University, a college that plays a big part in the town's life.

History of Goodwell

Goodwell started in 1901. It was first a stop along the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad. The railroad workers found a "good well" (a good source of water) there, so they named the stop Goodwell. The town officially began in 1903 and celebrated its 100th birthday in 2003.

Growth of Oklahoma Panhandle State University

A college was founded in Goodwell in 1909. It was first called the Pan-Handle Agricultural Institute. Over the years, its name changed a few times. In 1921, it became Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College. Later, in 1967, it was named Oklahoma Panhandle State College of Agriculture and Applied Science. Finally, in 1974, it got its current name: Oklahoma Panhandle State University.

No Man's Land Museum

The No Man's Land Museum was created in 1932. It started as a project by the science department at the college. In 1933, a group called the No Man's Land Historical Society took over the museum. They help preserve the history of the area.

Train Accident and Rail Service

On June 24, 2012, two Union Pacific trains crashed near Goodwell. The accident happened about one mile east of town. Sadly, three Union Pacific employees died in the collision. One person survived by jumping from the train just before the crash. Even after this event, Union Pacific still provides train freight service to Goodwell.

Goodwell is located in Oklahoma. The United States Census Bureau says the town covers about 1.2 square miles (3.1 square kilometers) of land.

Goodwell has a type of weather called a cold semi-arid climate. This means it's usually dry and can have both hot summers and cold winters. The hottest temperature ever recorded in Goodwell was 112°F (44°C) on June 27, 2011. The coldest temperature was -22°F (-30°C) on January 4, 1959.

In 2010, Goodwell had a population of 1,293 people. Most of the people (70.6%) were non-Hispanic white. Other groups included African American (8.2%), Native American (2.2%), and Asian (0.2%). About 17.5% of the population was Hispanic or Latino.

In 2000, there were 1,192 people living in Goodwell. There were 407 households, and 221 of these were families. About 30% of households had children under 18 living there. Many households (42.8%) were married couples. The average household had 2.32 people.

The population was quite young in 2000. About 17.5% of the people were under 18 years old. A large group, 46.1%, were between 18 and 24 years old. The average age in Goodwell was 22 years.
