Gopala Dynasty facts for kids
The Gopala Dynasty (also known as Gopal Bansha) was the first group of kings to rule the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. They were founded by a king named Bhuktaman. These kings ruled Nepal for a long time, about 505 years! After them, the Mahisapala dynasty took over. There were eight kings in the Gopala Dynasty, starting with Bhuktaman and ending with Yaksha Gupta.

The Start of the Gopala Dynasty
Who Were the Gopalas?
Stories say that the Gopala Dynasty was the first major ruling family in Nepal. They ruled for about five centuries, which is 500 years. After the Gopalas, the Mahisapala dynasty came to power.
Both the Gopalas and the Mahisapalas were sometimes called Abhiras. Some people believe that the Gopalas and Mahisapalas were actually part of the same big family. They might have been divided into two groups based on the jobs they did. For example, "Gopa" means cowherd, and "Mahisapala" means buffalo herder.

There were eight kings who ruled during the Gopala Dynasty. Here is a list of them:

Pashupatinath Temple
The kings of the Gopala Dynasty are famous for helping to restore the ancient Pashupatinath Temple. This important temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located on a volcanic mound in Nepal. The Gopala kings were very devoted to Lord Shiva.
