The Story of Gopher Dunes
The idea for Gopher Dunes started in the early 1980s. Frank Schuster, who owned a farm in Courtland, Ontario, wanted to create a place for off-road riding. His family bought the land in 1972 to grow tobacco. But Frank's love for motocross grew, and the land slowly changed.
In 1979, Frank and his wife Barb started a company called Schuster Excavating. They worked on farms, but Frank also began building a motocross track on his property. He wanted to help the growing off-road riding community. Frank teamed up with his friend Dale Vranckx. Dale opened Odyssey Recreation, a Honda dealership, right in a barn on the farm. This partnership was great because riders could get bikes and gear right where they rode.
By 1986, Gopher Dunes officially opened its first track. It first focused on ATV (all-terrain vehicle) racing. The very first event was a 24-hour ATV endurance race. Soon, the park also started hosting motocross races, with the first one happening in 1987.
Frank's son, Derek Schuster, grew up helping with everything at the park. Derek is a great rider himself. He has been key to Gopher Dunes' growth. He even started the Honda Canada GDR Fox Racing Team, which is one of the best motocross teams in Canada.
Awesome Tracks and Trails
Gopher Dunes has five amazing dirt bike tracks. They are made for all skill levels, from beginners to expert riders. You can also explore three different trail systems. Each one is over 10 kilometers long! These trails have tough, sandy ground. They are perfect for dirt bikes, ATVs, and side-by-sides. The challenging sand tracks are especially famous.
