Gordon, Maryland facts for kids
Gordon is a small, quiet place in Howard County, Maryland, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government, like a city or town might. Instead, it's part of the larger county government.
Gordon's Early History
Even though Gordon is a small community, it has a little bit of history! For a short time in the late 1800s, Gordon was home to a special place called a postal stop.
What Was a Postal Stop?
A postal stop was like a mini post office. People could send and receive letters and packages there. It was very important before cars and easy travel became common. Having a postal stop meant that Gordon was a recognized place where mail could be delivered.
The postal stop in Gordon was open for a little over a year. It started on December 21, 1893, and closed on April 15, 1895. After that, mail for Gordon would have been handled by a nearby larger post office.
