Park History
The area where Gordon Barnard Reserve now stands was once a creek bed. It was part of Glass Creek, flowing through a valley. In the 1950s, as the local area grew, this spot became the main rubbish dump for the old City of Camberwell.
In 1962, the Northern Pool was built at the south end of the area. This pool is now known as the Boroondara Sports Complex. The exact year the rubbish tip closed and became the park we see today isn't known. The reserve is named after Gordon Barnard, who used to be a manager for the City of Camberwell.
Getting Around the Park
You can reach Gordon Barnard Reserve by car. There's a small parking lot off Balwyn Road on the west side. A larger parking area is next to the sports pavilion and the Boroondara Sports Complex in the south. You can also find street parking on Tuxen and Tovey Streets to the north. Cars cannot drive through the park from one parking lot to another.
Public transport is also an option. Bus route 285 stops right by the reserve on Balwyn Road. This stop is near the Balwyn Leisure Centre building. Other bus routes, 302 and 304, on Belmore Road, are also close by.
Paths for Walking and Cycling
The park has many gravel and paved paths. These paths connect different parts of the reserve. A main path goes around most of the sports ovals. This path is great for walking, jogging, or riding your bike. Other paths lead to Jacka Street Reserve in the east, Belmore Road to the south, and Tovey Street to the north. You can also cross Balwyn Road to reach Hislop Park.
