Gordon Cook: An Olympic Sailor

Gordon Cook is known for his amazing skills in sailing. He has represented Canada at the Olympic Games, which is a huge achievement for any athlete.

School and Early Sailing

Gordon studied Engineering Physics at Queen's University. This means he learned a lot about science and how things work, which is super helpful for understanding boats and the water!

While at Queen's University, Gordon was part of the university's sailing team. This is where he met Ben Remocker, who would later become his sailing partner for the 2012 Olympics.

First Olympic Journey: Beijing 2008

Gordon Cook and Ben Remocker made history together. They were the very first Canadians to sail a special type of boat called a 49er in an Olympic Regatta. A 49er is a really fast and exciting sailboat, designed for two people.

They competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. They sailed really well and finished in 14th place. This was a great start to Gordon's Olympic career!

Second Olympic Journey: London 2012

After the 2008 Olympics, Gordon found a new sailing partner, Hunter Lowden, from West Vancouver. They worked hard together, training and competing to try and qualify for the 2012 Olympic games in London.

Qualifying for the Olympics is tough! Sailors have to do well in big international competitions. Gordon and Hunter didn't qualify in their first try at the 2011 ISAF World Championships. But they didn't give up! They tried again at the 2012 49er World Championships in Croatia and succeeded!

This made Gordon Cook the only Canadian ever to compete twice in the 49er sailing class at the Olympic Games. It shows how dedicated and skilled he is! At the 2012 London Olympics, Gordon and Hunter had an amazing start, finishing third in their very first race. Even though they didn't make it to the final medal race, competing in two Olympics is a fantastic accomplishment!
