Gordon Park is a public park located in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. This park is a fun place for people to visit and enjoy the outdoors. It covers a large area of 122 acres and sits right next to Lake Erie on the east side of the city. Gordon Park first opened its doors in 1893. It was named after a kind and wealthy businessman named William J. Gordon, who originally owned this land. Today, the park is managed by the Cleveland Metroparks system, which helps take care of many parks in the area.

History of Gordon Park

The story of Gordon Park begins with William J. Gordon. He was one of the people who started the Cleveland Iron Mining Company, which was a big business back then. Mr. Gordon was very thoughtful about the land he owned. He carefully planned and landscaped this area with a special goal in mind: he wanted to give it to the City of Cleveland. His wish was for the land to become a public park where everyone could come and have fun.

Becoming a State Park Area

Later on, a part of Gordon Park that is right by the lake became part of something bigger. In 1978, this section joined five other recreation spots along the lake. Together, they formed the Cleveland Lakefront State Park. This state park is supported by the state government. In fact, the main office for the Lakefront State Park is located right inside Gordon Park!

Joining the Metroparks System

In April 2013, the Cleveland City Council made an important decision about Gordon Park. They agreed to let the Cleveland Metroparks system manage the park for 99 years. This means the Metroparks team now helps keep Gordon Park beautiful and fun for everyone. They work to make sure the park has great facilities and activities for visitors of all ages.
