The Gosei (which means "Go sage" in Japanese) is a very important competition in Japan for expert players of the game of Go. It's also the special title given to the person who wins this competition.

What is Go?

Go is an ancient board game that started in China thousands of years ago. It's played by two people who take turns placing black or white stones on a grid. The goal is to control more of the board than your opponent. It's a game that needs a lot of thinking and strategy!

The Gosei Competition

The Gosei competition is one of the seven major Go titles in Japan. These titles are like championships for the best Go players. Winning the Gosei title is a huge honor for a Go player. It shows they are one of the top players in the country.

How Does it Work?

The Gosei competition happens every year. Many professional Go players compete in a series of matches. They play against each other until only two players are left. These two players then face off in a final match to decide who will be the Gosei champion. The winner gets the Gosei title and holds it until the next year's competition.

Why "Go Sage"?

The word "Gosei" means "Go sage" or "Go saint." A sage is a very wise person. So, the title suggests that the winner is incredibly skilled and wise in the game of Go. It's a way to show great respect for their talent.
