Gothenburg and Bohus County (Swedish: Göteborgs och Bohus län) was a special region, or county, in southern Sweden. It was like a local government area. The main city and administrative center of this county was Gothenburg.

This county was created a long time ago, in 1680. It existed for many years until it was officially closed down on 31 December 1997. After that, it became part of a new, larger county called Västra Götaland County.

What Was a Swedish County?

In Sweden, a county is a way to divide the country. It helps with local government and administration. Think of it like a state or a large province in other countries. Each county has its own leaders and helps manage things like healthcare, transportation, and regional planning.

Gothenburg and Bohus County was one of these important regions. It covered a large area along the coast of Sweden. It included the big city of Gothenburg and the beautiful coastal area of Bohuslän.

Why Did the County Change?

Gothenburg and Bohus County was closed down in 1997. This happened because the Swedish government decided to make some changes. They wanted to create larger counties to help manage things better.

So, Gothenburg and Bohus County joined with two other nearby counties. These were Skaraborg County and Älvsborg County. Together, they formed a brand new, bigger county called Västra Götaland County. This new county is one of the largest in Sweden today.

Who Were the Governors?

Each county in Sweden had a leader called a Governor. The Governor was in charge of the county's administration. They made sure that government decisions were carried out in their region. They also worked to improve life for the people living there.

The first known Governor of Gothenburg and Bohus County was Georg Lybecker, who served from 1680 to 1682. Many different people held this important role over the centuries. The last Governor was Göran Bengtsson, who served from 1996 until the county was closed in 1997.
