Early Life and Education
Oscar von Sydow was born in Kalmar, Sweden. His father, Henrik August von Sydow, worked as a clerk for a judge. Oscar grew up in a region called Norrland.
He finished his higher education exams in 1890. After that, he studied Law at Uppsala University. In 1894, he earned a degree to work in the government's civil service.
Government Career
Oscar von Sydow started working in the government in 1906. He became an Undersecretary of State at the Ministry for Civil Service Affairs. This ministry handled many government services.
In 1911, he became the Governor of Norrbotten County. A governor is like the head of a county or region. From 1914 to 1917, he served as the Minister for Civil Service Affairs. During this time, he helped create the Unemployment Commission. This group was set up to help people who did not have jobs.
After this, from 1917 to 1934, he was the Governor of Gothenburg and Bohus County.
Becoming Prime Minister
In 1921, the Prime Minister at the time, Gerhard Louis De Geer, suddenly resigned. The King of Sweden, Gustaf V, found it hard to find someone new to lead the government. This was because new elections were coming soon.
Hjalmar Branting, another important politician, was asked twice to become Prime Minister but he said no. So, the King offered the job to Oscar von Sydow, who accepted. He became Prime Minister on February 23, 1921.
Time as Prime Minister
Oscar von Sydow wanted to make sure his government would be strong. He told the Swedish Social Democratic Party that he would only lead if they promised to support him. This support was needed for important decisions about money and defense.
However, even with these agreements, the opposition in parliament voted against all the new government's ideas. Because of this, Oscar von Sydow resigned on October 13, 1921.
His most important achievement as Prime Minister was presenting a bill that ended the death penalty in Sweden. This meant that no one could be put to death as a punishment for a crime anymore.
Later Life
After being Prime Minister, Oscar von Sydow continued to serve his country. From 1934 until his death in 1936, he held the important position of Marshal of the Realm. This role is a high office in the royal court.
