Norrland is the northernmost part of Sweden. It's one of Sweden's three main regions. The other two are Götaland and Svealand.

Norrland covers a huge area. About 59% of all of Sweden is in Norrland! But only about 12% of Sweden's people live there. This means it's a very large but not very crowded place.

The biggest city in Norrland is Umeå.

What is Norrland?

Norrland is made up of several Swedish counties. These include Gävleborg County, Västernorrland County, Jämtland County, Västerbotten County, and Norrbotten County.

Sometimes, people talk about "Upper Norrland." This usually means the two northernmost counties: Norrbotten and Västerbotten.

Long ago, parts of northern Finland were also considered part of Norrland. This shows how the region's history is connected to its neighbors.

Amazing Nature and Phenomena

Norrland is famous for its beautiful landscape. It has vast forests, tall mountains, and many lakes. It's a great place for outdoor adventures!

It's also known for some amazing natural events:

  • Midnight sun: In the summer, the sun never fully sets in the far north. It stays visible even at midnight!
  • Polar night: In winter, the opposite happens. The sun might not rise at all for a period. It stays dark for much of the day.
  • Aurora (Northern Lights): This is a spectacular light show in the sky. Green, pink, and purple lights dance across the night sky. It's caused by particles from the sun hitting Earth's atmosphere.

These unique natural events make Norrland a special place to visit and live.
