Gotofredo I (archbishop of Milan) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gotofredo I (also spelled Gotifredo) was an important leader who served as the Archbishop of Milan from 974 until his death in 979. He played a key role in the politics of his time, especially by supporting the powerful Ottonian family.

Early Life and Career

Gotofredo first appears in historical records in July 962. At that time, he was known as Gotefredus clericus ac notarius, which means "Gotofredo, a church official and a secretary." He worked for Archbishop Walpert in Milan.

Later, Gotofredo became a subdeacon, which is a rank in the church. He was a strong supporter of the Ottonians, a powerful family of German emperors. Because of his skills, he often worked as a diplomat for them. This meant he helped to manage relationships and make agreements between different rulers and groups.

Political Involvement

Gotofredo was involved in several important political events. On June 25, 965, he was present at the Battle of the Po. In this battle, Guy of Ivrea was defeated and killed.

Gotofredo also helped to settle conflicts. After Guy's death, his younger brother, Conrad Conon, was offered the March of Ivrea. This was a large territory that had become available. In 970, Gotofredo officially gave this land to Conrad Conon on behalf of Otto I, who was the Holy Roman Emperor. This shows how much trust the emperor placed in Gotofredo.

Time as Archbishop

Gotofredo became the Archbishop of Milan in July or August 974, shortly after his predecessor, Arnulf I, passed away. He served as archbishop for about five years.

During his time as archbishop, Gotofredo continued to support the Ottonian dynasty. He also supported German rule over Italy. This political stance was a key part of his leadership.

Gotofredo I died on September 19, 979. He was buried in a church called Santa Maria Iemale. He was one of the last in a series of seven archbishops who were very active in politics. After his death, the church in Milan entered a quieter period.
