Guy's Early Actions

Helping a Leader in Exile

In 959, Guy helped a leader from Venice named Pietro III Candiano. Pietro was a doge, which was the main leader of Venice at that time. Pietro had been forced to leave his home, so Guy gave him a safe place to stay.

Guy then took Pietro to meet his father, King Berengar. Together, Guy and the king led a military journey. They went to fight against Theobald II, who was the Duke of Spoleto. Guy was successful in this fight. He captured two important cities: Spoleto and Camerino.

Later Years and Conflict

Fighting for the Throne

In 962, Guy's older brother, Adalbert, came back from being away in Corsica. Adalbert wanted to get his throne back. Guy and his brother Conrad joined Adalbert. They worked together to try and take over Pavia, which was the capital city of Italy. They tried to capture the city by surrounding it, which is called a siege.

After the siege, the brothers moved back to strongholds. These were like castles or forts near Lakes Como and Garda.

Loss of Lands and Death

Later, the powerful Emperor Otto I took away Guy's lands. These lands were then given to another leader, Guy, Bishop of Modena.

In 965, Guy was fighting in a battle. He was helping his brother Adalbert against an army from Swabia. This army was led by Duke Burchard III. Guy was killed in this battle, which took place near the Po River. After Guy's death, his brother Adalbert managed to escape to France.
