All About Govan Subway Station
What Makes Govan Station Important?
Govan station is a key place for travelers. It connects directly to the Govan bus station. This makes it easy to switch between subway trains and buses.
The subway line from Govan to Partick is the only train link across the River Clyde in the western part of Glasgow. Because of this, Govan is one of the busiest stations on the subway line. Many people use it every day to get around the city.
History and Modernization
Govan station has been around for a long time. It first opened on December 14, 1896. Back then, it was known by a different name: Govan Cross.
The station closed for a big update in 1977. This was because cracks appeared in the roof of the old building. The subway system needed to be made safer and more modern.
As part of the updates, the old station buildings were replaced. The original single platform, which was an island platform, was changed. It became two separate side platforms instead. This new design helps people get on and off trains more easily.
Getting Around Govan Station
Govan station is designed to be easy for everyone to use. It has a lift and an escalator. These help people move between the street level and the underground platforms.
Along with St Enoch subway station, Govan is one of only two Glasgow Subway stations that are wheelchair accessible. This means people using wheelchairs can use the station without problems.
Govan in Popular Culture
Govan station is even famous in a song! It is mentioned in a song called The Glasgow Underground. This song was written by a well-known Scottish writer, Cliff Hanley.
