Government of Hungary facts for kids
The Government of Hungary (which in Hungarian is Magyarország Kormánya) is the main group that runs the country. It holds the executive power in Hungary. This means it makes sure the country's laws are carried out. The government is led by the Prime Minister and includes many different ministers. It is the most important part of how the country is managed.
The Prime Minister, also called miniszterelnök, is chosen by the National Assembly, which is like Hungary's parliament. The Prime Minister is the head of government and the main political leader. Usually, the Prime Minister is the leader of the political party that won the most seats in the parliament. The Prime Minister picks the other ministers who will be part of the government. They also have the power to remove ministers if needed. Before becoming a minister, each person must attend public meetings with parliamentary committees. They also need to be approved by a vote in the National Assembly and officially by the President. The entire group of ministers, called the cabinet, is answerable to the parliament.
The Hungarian Government has a very strong role compared to governments in many other countries. Since Hungary adopted its current constitution, the government is clearly stated as the main executive power. In many other countries, the president often has a more symbolic role as the chief executive.
Since the end of communism, Hungary has used a multi-party system. This means many different political parties can take part in elections. For example, a new Hungarian parliament was chosen in an election on April 8, 2018. This was the eighth election since Hungary held its first multi-party election in 1990. The Fidesz–KDNP alliance won this election. They kept a strong majority, and Viktor Orbán continued as Prime Minister. This election followed the new Constitution of Hungary, which started on January 1, 2012. A new election law also began that day. In this election, voters chose 199 members of parliament (MPs), which was fewer than the previous 386.
