The Prime Minister of Hungary is the main leader of the Hungarian government. Think of them as the captain of a team that runs the country! Their official title in Hungarian is miniszterelnök, which means "minister-president." However, in English, we usually call them the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister and their team, called the Cabinet, are responsible for their decisions and actions. They answer to the National Assembly (which is like Hungary's parliament), their political party, and ultimately to the people who vote in elections.
As of today, Péter Magyar is the Prime Minister of Hungary. He started his role on May 9, 2026.

Understanding Hungary's Prime Minister
How is the Prime Minister Chosen?
According to Hungary's main law, called the Fundamental Law, the President suggests who should be Prime Minister. Then, the National Assembly formally votes to elect that person.
The President usually nominates the leader of the political party that wins the most seats in the National Assembly. If no single party wins a majority, the President talks with the leaders of all the parties in the assembly. They then choose the person who they believe can get the most support from the assembly members. This person is then formally elected by a simple majority vote in the assembly. In real life, this often means the Prime Minister is the leader of the party that won the most votes, or the leader of the biggest party in a group of parties working together.
What's in a Name? The Prime Minister's Official Title
In Hungary, the leader of the government is called miniszterelnök. This word translates to "minister-president." But because "prime minister" or "premier" is a more common title for a government leader in many English-speaking countries, most English sources use "Prime Minister" to make it easier to understand.
A Journey Through Time: The History of Hungary's Prime Minister
Hungary's First Prime Minister
The idea of a Prime Minister in Hungary became important during the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. People wanted Hungary to have its own government, separate from the Austrian Empire. One of their main requests was for a responsible government based in Buda-Pest.
On March 17, 1848, King Ferdinand V appointed Count Lajos Batthyány as Hungary's first Prime Minister. His government was called a "ministry," and the different parts of the government were called "departments." After the fight for freedom ended, the position of Prime Minister was empty for a while.
Longest-Serving Leaders
One of the longest-serving Prime Ministers in Hungary's history is Viktor Orbán. He held the position for two periods: first from July 6, 1998, to May 27, 2002, and then again from May 29, 2010, until May 9, 2026. If you add up all his time in office, he served for about 20 years! He became the longest-serving Prime Minister on November 30, 2020, passing Kálmán Tisza.
Before the Prime Minister: The Palatine
Before the role of Prime Minister was created, there was another very important position in the Kingdom of Hungary called the Palatine. The Palatine was the highest official after the king. They were like a powerful chief minister and a top judge all rolled into one!
At first, the king chose the Palatine. Later, the Hungarian assembly, called the Diet, elected them. Over time, the position changed again, and it even became a hereditary role within a branch of the Habsburg royal family. The Palatine helped the king rule the country for many centuries until the Prime Minister's role was established in 1848.
