History of Cavite's Governors
For a long time during the Spanish rule, Cavite was managed by an "alcalde mayor." This person was the main representative of the Governor-General in Manila. The alcalde mayor had a lot of power. They handled all the executive, judicial (court-related), and law-making duties in Cavite.
Later, on June 25, 1847, the title of "alcalde mayor" was changed. It became "politico-military governor." This new title meant that the leader still had political and military power, but they no longer handled court cases. Their judicial duties were taken away. Colonel Fernando Pargas was the last Spanish politico-military governor of Cavite. After him, three Filipino leaders took on the role during the First Philippine Republic.
