Govind Narain was an important Indian government official. He was born on May 5, 1916, and passed away on April 3, 2012. He worked as a civil servant, which means he helped run the country's government. One of his biggest roles was being the 8th Governor of Karnataka, a state in India.

He also served as India's Defence Secretary and Home Secretary. Many people saw him as one of India's most respected government workers. From 1951 to 1954, he even worked as an adviser to the King of Nepal.

Early Life and Education

Govind Narain was born in a place called Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, India. He studied at the University of Allahabad in India. Later, he continued his education at the famous University of Oxford in England.

His Career as a Civil Servant

In 1939, Govind Narain was chosen to join the Indian Civil Service. This was a very important group of people who helped manage the government. He held many key positions during his career.

He served as the Home Secretary of India from 1971 to 1973. In this role, he was very important during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. After that, he became the Defence Secretary of India, a job he held from 1973 to 1975. Before these big roles, he was also the chief secretary for the state of Uttar Pradesh from 1958 to 1961.

In 1951, he was sent to Nepal to help build good relations between India and Nepal. He worked there as an adviser to the King.

Political Role

Govind Narain was appointed as the Governor of Karnataka. He served in this important position from 1977 to 1983. As Governor, he was the head of the state government.

In 2009, he received the Padma Vibhushan award. This is one of India's highest civilian honors, given for exceptional and distinguished service.
