A Look Back: Grañén's History
The Spanish Civil War and Help from Afar
During the Spanish Civil War (a big conflict that happened in Spain many years ago), Grañén became a very important place. Because it was close to the fighting lines near the city of Huesca, a special hospital was set up there. This hospital was called a field hospital, and it was run by a group from Britain called the British Medical Aid Unit. Their job was to help people who were injured during the war. Later, this hospital moved to a nearby town called Poleñino.
Agnes Hodgson's Story
An Australian nurse named Agnes Hodgson worked at both of these hospitals in 1937. She kept a detailed diary about her experiences. Her diary tells us a lot about what conditions were like and the challenges they faced helping people. When she returned to Australia, she shared her feelings with a reporter. She said that she had never seen such terrible injuries and suffering as those caused by war. What she saw in Spain made her a strong believer in peace forever. This means she became someone who would always work to prevent wars.
