Discovering Graae Glacier
Mapping the Glacier
The Graae Glacier was carefully studied and mapped between 1951 and 1957. This work was done by a group called the South Georgia Survey (SGS). The SGS explored and mapped many parts of South Georgia during those years.
Who Was Morgens Graae?
The glacier was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee. This committee is in charge of naming places in the Antarctic region. They named it after Morgens E.W. Graae. He was a person from Denmark.
Morgens Graae was important because he designed special sledges. These sledges were used by the South Georgia Survey team. He helped them in 1953–54 and again in 1955–56. His sledges made it easier for the explorers to travel across the icy land.
