The Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah, California, is a special place where you can learn about the artist Grace Hudson. Right next to the museum is the Sun House. Grace and her husband, John, designed and built this house in 1911. Today, the city of Ukiah owns and takes care of both the house and the museum. The Sun House is a beautiful home made of redwood in the Craftsman style. It's so important that it's listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

History of the Sun House

After living in Oklahoma Territory for a few years (from 1904 to 1906), Grace and John Hudson came back home to Ukiah, California. They decided to design and build their own unique house. This house, finished in 1911, became known as The Sun House.

Design and Lifestyle

The Sun House was built in the Craftsman style, which was popular at the time. It was made from strong redwood trees. The Hudsons loved the Hopi sun symbol, which is a design from Native American culture. They put this symbol right above their front door.

Grace and John lived a simple but interesting life. They enjoyed collecting things, traveling, doing field work, reading, and having friends over. They also loved photography and, of course, Grace's painting. John Hudson passed away at The Sun House in 1936, and Grace passed away in 1937.

Preserving Their Legacy

Grace and John Hudson did not have any children. Grace left The Sun House and its land to her nephew, Mark Carpenter. Mark understood how special the house was. He carefully kept the house and all the 30,000 objects the Hudsons had collected.

Later, Mark gave the house and its collections to the City of Ukiah. The Sun House is now recognized as a very important historical site. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a California Historical Landmark (number 926).

The Museum Today

The Sun House and the Grace Hudson Museum are managed by the city. They are part of the 4-acre (16,000 m2) Hudson-Carpenter park. The museum's website explains that Grace Hudson's artwork is still very popular. People admire her paintings for showing native peoples in a kind and respectful way.
