Graciela Beatriz Salicrup López (born April 7, 1935, in Mexico City, Mexico – died July 29, 1982) was a talented Mexican architect, archaeologist, and mathematician. She was a leading figure in a special area of math called categorical topology during the 1970s and 1980s. Many of her important ideas were first published in Spanish. Because of this, her amazing work wasn't fully known until after she passed away too soon.

Early Life and Family

Graciela Beatriz Salicrup López was born in Mexico City on April 7, 1935. As a child, she went to a German-language primary school called Colegio Alemán. After that, she attended a religious high school for girls.

A teacher at Colegio Alemán first sparked her interest in mathematics. Her family didn't quite understand or support this passion at first. Graciela later married Armando Hinojosa Cavazos. They had three children together. Ariel loved music, David became an architect like his mother, and Mariana studied ballet.

Graciela had many different hobbies and interests. She especially loved music and art. She enjoyed going to the opera and visiting art shows. She also liked reading books and learning about history.

Graciela's Education Journey

After finishing high school, Graciela Salicrup López went to the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria. There, she focused on studying mathematics.

She then attended the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). At UNAM, she studied both architecture and the German language. In 1959, Graciela graduated from UNAM with her degree in architecture.

Ten years later, when she was 34 years old, she earned her master's degree. She received this advanced degree from the same university, UNAM.

Her Amazing Career

After graduating from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1959, Graciela Salicrup López started working. She joined anthropologist Laurette Séjourné on a project. They worked to restore the ancient city of Teotihuacan. Graciela helped by surveying the area and creating plans. She also directed excavations in important parts of this historic site.

Graciela still really wanted to become a mathematician. So, in 1964, she finally enrolled in the Faculty of Sciences at UNAM to study mathematics. From 1966 to 1968, she taught math at UNAM's Faculty of Architecture. Her master's thesis, accepted in 1969, was about a topic called the Jiang Boju subgroup.

After getting her master's degree in 1969, Graciela began teaching at the UNAM Faculty of Sciences. In 1970, she became a researcher at the UNAM Mathematics Institute. There, she worked closely with Dr. Roberto Vázquez, who was her mentor. That same year, she published her first research paper with him.

Her work focused on the structure of the Top category of topological spaces. This involves studying how continuous functions work. She connected ideas like reflexivity to concepts of connection. This was important for understanding different types of spaces. Her papers with Dr. Vázquez were always in Spanish. This meant many mathematicians around the world didn't know about her important discoveries.

During this time, many important mathematicians were studying topology. One of them was Horst Herrlich. Graciela and some of her fellow mathematicians decided to take German lessons. This helped them communicate with these international experts.

In 1973, she was chosen to join the Sociedad Matematica Mexicana. This also gave her membership in the American Mathematical Society.

Her Lasting Legacy

Sadly, Graciela had a disagreement with her mentor Roberto Vázquez shortly before her death. They stopped working together. In the summer of 1982, Lamar Bentley and Horst Herrlich visited her. They planned to work on new projects together.

Soon after this visit, Graciela had a bad fall. She was seriously injured and did not recover. Graciela Salicrup López passed away on July 29, 1982.

The main hall of the UNAM Institute of Mathematics is named after her. This honors her important contributions to mathematics. Her research in categorical topology was published in 1986 by Horst Herrlich. This made her work known to a wider audience.
