Gradyville is a small, unincorporated community located in Adair County, Kentucky, in the United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It sits at an elevation of 699 feet (213 meters) above sea level. This community is known as the birthplace of Edgar Diddle, a famous basketball coach from Western Kentucky University.

A Look Back at Gradyville's History
How Gradyville Got Its Name
The community of Gradyville got its start with a post office. This post office was opened in 1848. It was named after its very first postmaster, a man named William F. Grady.
Rules About Drinks in 1882
In February 1882, a special law was passed for Gradyville. The law said that no one could sell alcoholic drinks within one mile of Wilmores and Kemp's store-house in Gradyville. If someone broke this rule, they had to pay a fine of $20 for each time it happened.
The Big Flood of 1907
Gradyville experienced a terrible flash flood on June 7, 1907. This happened because of a sudden, very heavy rainstorm called a cloudburst. Three inches of rain fell in just one hour!
This huge amount of rain caused Big Creek, which is usually a small and calm stream running through Gradyville, to rise very quickly. The water level went up by ten feet! The powerful floodwaters washed away several houses that were built near the creek's banks. Sadly, this flood led to the deaths of 20 people living in Gradyville.

Edgar Diddle: A Basketball Legend
Edgar Diddle was a very well-known American college men's basketball coach. He was born near Gradyville in 1895 and grew up there. He is considered a native of the community.
