The Grand Canyon North Rim Headquarters is a special historic area located on the North Rim of the amazing Grand Canyon in Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona. This area was built between 1926 and the 1930s. It shows off a cool building style called rustic architecture. These buildings were used as homes for park employees, offices, and other helpful facilities.
A Look Back: How the Headquarters Started
For a while, the North Rim didn't have many buildings. This was partly because a politician named Senator Ralph Cameron had business interests in the park. He made it hard for money to be spent on improving the North Rim.
Building finally began in 1926. The first structures included the Ranger Residence. There was also a wood shed and a barn for horses. More buildings were added in the late 1920s and 1930s. These included places to store equipment, warehouses, and more homes. The very last building constructed for the Headquarters was an equipment shed in 1936.
Over the years, how these buildings are used has changed. However, their outside look has mostly stayed the same. The most interesting parts of their design are on the outside. Also, there's a cool fireplace in one home (Residence No. 102). Some maintenance buildings have neat wrought iron door hinges.
What the Headquarters Looks Like
The Headquarters area is split into two main parts. Each part has homes for people. The eastern side includes a garage and a ranger station. The western side has an office, a barn, and buildings for maintenance.
The oldest building is a house built in 1926. It has one story and a pointed roof. It's made of wood siding on a stone base. Other houses, sheds, and a dormitory were built in 1931. The dormitory is especially known for its rustic style. A ranger station, also called the old administration building, was built in 1931. It was moved in the mid-1930s. Sadly, it was destroyed by a fire on March 5, 1982.
Other buildings include a machine shop from 1932. There's also a gas and oil station built in 1933. Many other homes are part of the district too.
Becoming a Historic Place
The Grand Canyon North Rim Headquarters District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 2, 1982. This means it's recognized as an important historical site.
