The Grand Castle is a large apartment complex in Grandville, Michigan. It has 520 apartment homes for many families. The building looks like a giant castle! Its design was inspired by a famous castle in Germany called Neuschwanstein Castle. Some people even say it's the second-largest castle-like building in the world.
History of the Grand Castle
In 2015, a person named Roger Lucas had an idea for a big new building. He owns a company called Grand Castle, LLC. He shared his plans with the city of Grandville, Michigan.
The land where the Grand Castle now stands used to be a mobile home park. It was called LaGrande Mobile Home Park and opened in 1957. This park closed in 2005. Roger Lucas's company bought this land in May 2016. They planned to build the Grand Castle there.
In 2016, Grand Castle, LLC also bought Sanford Lake. This lake is right next to the castle property. The lake formed many years ago from a gravel mining operation. Now, Sanford Lake is a safe home for many animals. You can find ducks, geese, and different kinds of fish there.
By August 2018, about 50 people had put down money to rent apartments. This showed that people were interested in living in the new castle.
How the Grand Castle Was Designed and Built
The owner, Roger Lucas, really loves the Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. He said his family has visited that castle many times. This famous German castle was the main inspiration for the Grand Castle's look.
The first idea for the Grand Castle was a 10-story building with 356 apartments. But the final design ended up being even bigger!
Building the Grand Castle started in April 2016. By September 13, 2016, the castle had already reached over 100 feet tall. Workers used strong materials like concrete for the walls and steel for the roof.
Today, the Grand Castle has 508 apartment homes. These homes come in different sizes, from small studio apartments to very large three-story penthouses. The plans also include over 750 covered parking spaces. There will be a clubhouse, a swimming pool like you'd find at a resort, and even a dog park. People living there can also enjoy a community beach with fire pits. Other fun things to do include swimming, fishing, or kayaking at Sanford Lake. There's also a walking trail.
Future Plans for the Grand Castle
There are plans for more buildings around the Grand Castle. This next part of the project is called Phase II. It includes building 13 smaller buildings, each with 8 apartments. These will add 104 more homes. Phase II also plans for new office and retail stores. These will be built along 28th Street.
