St. Eugene Catholic Church
The St. Eugene Catholic Church is an important part of the community. It was started in 1961 by a religious leader named Maurice Schexnayder, who was then the Bishop of Lafayette. This church is connected to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lake Charles.
The McCall Family and Cemetery
The McCall Cemetery in Grand Chenier is named after a very old and important family in Cameron Parish. One member of this family, Thomas W. McCall, was the superintendent of schools for Cameron Parish for 40 years! This means he was in charge of all the schools in the area for a very long time.
His son-in-law, Conway LeBleu, was also a very important person. He served as the state representative for Cameron Parish from 1964 to 1988. This means he helped make laws for the state and represented the people of Cameron Parish in the government.
Conway LeBleu's wife was Virgie Annie McCall (1918-2016). She was one of the people who helped start the Cameron Parish Library. Both Conway and Virgie Annie are buried at the McCall Cemetery.
