Grand Gorge, New York facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Grand Gorge is a small community called a hamlet in Delaware County, New York, United States. It's part of the town of Roxbury. Grand Gorge has its own post office with the special number code 12434. Long ago, it was home to the Grand Gorge Railroad Station, but that building is no longer there.

The More Family's Story

Grand Gorge was first known as "Moresville." This name came from the More family, who were the very first people to settle in what is now the town of Roxbury. The More family traveled from Scotland in 1772. They first settled in a place called Harpersfield.

On their journey, they met a man named John Clark. They decided to trade land claims, and John More received the land where Grand Gorge is located today. Other families soon joined them, and by 1790, the community was growing well.

John More (born February 24, 1745) and his wife Betty Taylor More (born 1738) had eight children. These children then had many more children, leading to a very large family tree! Today, there are over 14,000 recorded descendants from this one family.

Some famous people are descendants of the More family:

  • Jay Gould was a very important person in the railroad business. His mother was a More.
  • James Hadley Billington was the U.S. Librarian of Congress, a top job in charge of the country's biggest library.

Grand Gorge's Population

Knowing how many people live in a place is called demographics. In the year 2000, a count called the 2000 Census showed that Grand Gorge had 663 people living there.

However, in 2010, Grand Gorge was not listed as a separate "census-designated place." This means that its population numbers were counted as part of the larger town of Roxbury, so we don't have separate population statistics for Grand Gorge after 2000.
