History of Roxbury

The town of Roxbury was created in 1799. It was formed from a part of the town of Stamford. When New York State first divided into counties, Roxbury was part of Albany County.

Famous People from Roxbury

Roxbury is known as the birthplace of two important figures.

  • John Burroughs was a famous naturalist. A naturalist studies nature and the environment. A special memorial site marks his birthplace.
  • Jay Gould was also born in Roxbury. He was a very powerful railroad financier. This means he helped fund and build many railroads.

Many buildings in Roxbury are important for their history. The Main Street Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This list includes places important to American history. The district includes the Jay Gould Memorial Church.

The East Branch of the Delaware River starts in Roxbury. Its source is a pond south of Grand Gorge. Most of Roxbury is in the valley of this river. The northeastern part of the town drains into Schoharie Creek. This creek flows north into the Mohawk River, which is part of the Hudson River watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river or lake.
