What Was the Granite Freeman?

The Granite Freeman was a newspaper that helped share news and ideas. It was published for two years, from 1844 to 1846. The newspaper was created by Joseph E. Hood in Concord, New Hampshire.

Before it was called the Granite Freeman, it was known as the Family Visitor. Later, it joined with another newspaper called the Independent Democrat. Joseph Hood, who started the paper, later worked for The Republican newspaper in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Fighting for Freedom: The Liberty Party

The Granite Freeman was closely connected to a political group called the Liberty Party. This party was formed in the 1840s and had one main goal: to stop slavery. The newspaper acted like a voice for the Liberty Party, sharing its ideas and messages.

Later, the Liberty Party joined with another group called the Free Soil Party in 1848. The Free Soil Party also worked to prevent slavery from spreading into new parts of the United States.

A Voice for Oney Judge

One of the most important things the Granite Freeman did was publish the story of Oney Judge. Oney Judge was a woman who had been forced to work for George Washington, who later became the first President of the United States.

In 1796, Oney Judge bravely escaped from Washington's household. The Granite Freeman newspaper shared her memories and experiences. This helped people understand what life was like for those who were enslaved and why it was so important to end slavery.
