Granite Quarry School is a special historic school complex located in Granite Quarry, North Carolina. It is also known by other names like Schuford Memorial Elementary School and Granite Quarry Elementary School. This school has an important past, especially for the community it served.

Discovering Granite Quarry School

Granite Quarry School is found in Rowan County, North Carolina. It's not just one building, but a group of buildings that worked together as a school. The main school building was built a long time ago, in 1933.

What the School Looks Like

The main school building is one story tall. It has a unique "H" shape when you look at it from above. The outside walls are covered in strong, beautiful granite stone.

The roof of the main building slopes on the sides. It also has small windows sticking out, called shed dormers. The main entrance has a special covered porch with a triangular top, known as a pedimented portico.

Other Buildings at the School

Two other important buildings are connected to the main school. You can walk between them using open, covered walkways. One of these is the cafeteria, built in 1956. This building was designed by an architect named Leslie Boney. The other building is a classroom building, which was added in 1960.

A Look Back at History

Granite Quarry School was first built for African-American students. At that time, schools were often separated by race. This school served its students until 1968. In that year, students from Granite Quarry School joined other schools in the county. This change was part of a bigger movement to integrate schools.

Becoming a Historic Landmark

Because of its important history and unique architecture, Granite Quarry School was recognized as a special place. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. This listing helps to protect and remember important sites in American history.
