History of Granite Quarry
Granite Quarry was first called Woodville when it was founded in the late 1800s. The first post office opened in 1891. It was named Woodsides after a well-known local family. The town officially became Woodsides on March 7, 1901. This change was made by the North Carolina General Assembly. Jerry L. Shuping was the first mayor of the town. Early town meetings were held in a room above the W. S. Brown store. Today's Town Hall Municipal Building was built in 1963. The town later bought it.
Soon after the town was formed, there was a problem with mail. Another town in North Carolina was also named Woodsides. To fix this, the post office changed its name in 1902. It became Granite Quarry, named after the stone found in the area. The town's name officially changed to Granite Quarry on February 5, 1905.
Two important historical places in the town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Michael Braun House and the Granite Quarry School.
For a long time, people and businesses in Granite Quarry received mail with a Salisbury address. This was because the Granite Quarry post office only had mailboxes, not delivery services. Town officials worked to change this since 1990. In late 2015, with help from U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, the Postal Service agreed to let Granite Quarry have its own address.
