The Granton Waterfront regeneration is a big project happening in Edinburgh, Scotland. It's all about making a part of the city along the Firth of Forth (which is like a wide river mouth leading to the sea) much better. This area is called Granton. The word "regeneration" means bringing new life and improvements to an older area.

This project involves three main groups who own land there: Arcus (which used to be called Forth Ports), National Grid plc, and the City of Edinburgh Council. Since the early 2000s, when the plans were first made, a lot has changed in Granton.

What's New in Granton?

This regeneration project has brought many exciting changes to the Granton area. It's transforming old industrial land into a vibrant place for people to live, learn, and enjoy.

New Homes and Shops

One of the biggest changes is the creation of many new places to live.

  • About 1,400 new homes have been built in Granton. These homes offer modern living spaces for families and individuals.
  • New food shops have opened, making it easier for residents to buy groceries and other daily needs.

Education and Business

The area has also seen improvements in education and business opportunities.

  • A brand new campus for Telford College (now part of Edinburgh College) was built in Granton. This college provides education and training for many students.
  • Around 16,000 square meters of commercial office space have been developed. This means new places for businesses to set up, potentially creating jobs.

Parks and Green Spaces

Making the area greener and more enjoyable for everyone is a key part of the project.

  • A new road called Waterfront Avenue has been built in Granton. This helps with traffic flow and access to the new developments.
  • A large public park, covering about 110 acres, has been created. This park is part of National Grid's Forthquarter development and offers a great space for outdoor activities.

Connecting the Coastline

One of the most exciting developments is a new path along the water.

  • A new waterside promenade (a fancy word for a walking path) has started to be built.
  • This path will connect the River Almond at Cramond all the way to the River Esk at Joppa.
  • Once finished, this will create an amazing 18-kilometer (about 11-mile) walkway and cycleway. It will be perfect for walking, running, or cycling along the coast.

Future Plans for Granton

After a worldwide economic slowdown in 2008, the city's planning team created a new plan. This plan is more flexible for future building work. It helps make sure that development can continue in a way that suits the area's needs.
