Granville is a small, special community in Jackson County, Tennessee. It's not a big city, but it has a lot of history and fun things to do! This town is famous for being the birthplace of Albert Gore, Sr., who was a U.S. Senator and the father of former Vice-President Al Gore.

Discover Granville, Tennessee

Granville is almost surrounded by the beautiful Cordell Hull Lake. When the Cordell Hull Dam was built in the early 1970s, much of the town's farmland was covered by water. This made Granville a very quiet place for a while, almost like a "ghost town."

Explore Granville's History

You can learn all about Granville's past at the Granville Museum. This museum has cool exhibits and displays that show what life was like in the community. It also hosts fun festivals and special events throughout the year. The museum has old records, like census information and store ledgers, that tell stories about families who lived here, especially around the time of World War I.

Fun Festivals and Music

Granville hosts three big festivals every year that bring the town to life!

  • Heritage Day: This festival happens the Saturday before Memorial Day. You can enjoy bluegrass music, see antique cars, and watch people show how things were done in the past.
  • Scarecrow Festival: On the first Saturday in October, Granville has the biggest scarecrow festival in Tennessee! There's also a quilt show at the same time.
  • Country Christmas: The second Saturday of December brings a Country Christmas festival. You can see an antique toy show and watch a Christmas parade.

All these festivals use the town's historic buildings, making them extra special.

The historic T.B. Sutton General Store is a popular spot. Every Saturday night, all year long, you can listen to live bluegrass music there!

Historic Places to Explore

Granville is home to two places that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are very important historical sites!

Carverdale Farms

Carverdale Farms was added to the National Register on July 31, 2018. This farm is one of the oldest settlements in Jackson County. It's also one of the oldest farms in Tennessee that has been working continuously! Joseph Williamson and his family first settled here in 1830. Later, in 1890, Samuel Sampson Carver bought the property. He ran a saw mill, a blacksmith shop, and a general store, along with the farm. During World War II, the farm was even used for military training! In 1955, Joe Moore, who is Carver's great-grandson and the current owner, was featured on the cover of Time magazine. He was named the 1955 Star Farmer of America!

T.B. Sutton General Store

Granville's T.B. Sutton General Store was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 7, 2019. This store was built in 1880 and is the oldest business building still standing in Granville. The store was empty for about 30 years until Harold and Beverley Sutton bought and fixed it up. In 2007, they gave the building to Historic Granville Incorporated. This group continues to run it as a general store, a restaurant, and a place for music. The Sutton Store has even been recognized by magazines like Country Living and Taste of the South as one of America's must-see general stores!
