A grape tomato is a tiny, oval-shaped tomato. It looks a bit like a small grape, which is how it got its name! These tomatoes are similar in size and taste to a cherry tomato. However, grape tomatoes have a more oblong, or stretched-out, shape, much like a plum tomato.

What is a Grape Tomato?

Grape tomatoes are small and sweet. They are perfect for snacking or adding to salads. They are known for their firm texture and juicy inside. Even though they are small, they pack a lot of flavor!

Where Do Grape Tomatoes Come From?

It is believed that grape tomatoes first grew in Southeast Asia. Today, they are enjoyed all over the world. In some parts of Thailand, people even eat them as tasty snacks.

How Grape Tomatoes Came to the United States

Grape tomatoes were first brought to the United States in 1997. A grower named Andrew Chu introduced them. He got the special seeds from a company in Taiwan called Known-You Seed Co. Later, a company called Procacci Brothers started growing many of them. They sell these tomatoes under the fun name "Santa Sweets."

Growing Grape Tomatoes

Growing grape tomatoes can be a bit tricky for farmers. They do not produce as many tomatoes as some other small varieties, like cherry tomatoes. This makes them a special crop to grow.
