Graphania lithias is a type of moth that belongs to a family called Noctuidae. A scientist named Edward Meyrick first described this moth in 1887. He found the first examples of this moth near Castle Hill in New Zealand. At that time, he gave it the name Mamestra lithias.

This moth is special because it is endemic to New Zealand. This means you can only find Graphania lithias living in New Zealand and nowhere else in the world.

What is the Graphania lithias Moth?

The Graphania lithias moth is a small, winged insect. Like all moths, it goes through a life cycle that includes egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult stages. As an adult, it has wings and can fly.

Moth Family: Noctuidae

Graphania lithias is part of the Noctuidae family. This is a very large group of moths. Many moths in this family are active at night. They are often called "owlet moths" because some have large eyes that look like an owl's.

Changing Names: How Scientists Classify Moths

In 2019, a scientist named Robert J. B. Hoare did a big study. He looked closely at many New Zealand moths from the Noctuidae family. He carefully checked the original moths that Edward Meyrick used to describe Graphania lithias.

After his research, Hoare decided that Graphania lithias actually fit better into a different group, or genus, called Ichneutica. This is why you might sometimes see this moth referred to as Ichneutica lithias. Scientists often update names as they learn more about different species.

Where Does This Moth Live?

As mentioned, Graphania lithias is found only in New Zealand. The first specimens were collected near Castle Hill, which is close to Christchurch. This area is known for its unique landscapes and plants.

Host Plants

Moths often depend on specific plants for their caterpillars to eat. These are called host plants. For Graphania lithias, one known host plant is Melicytus alpinus. This plant is important for the moth's life cycle and survival.
